Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
