Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Deploy in City

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard troops in the Chicago region under orders from the current government, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation approximately 50 miles from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, including murders.

On Wednesday, two hundred Texas National Guard members were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 state military personnel readying for deployment, per sources. Officials reportedly stated the troops would avoid police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the military facility in the town. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in lines. Additional fencing was placed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified immigration enforcement in the city in the past month, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an executive order on that day banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has charged the president of using military forces as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that the president is trying to "justify and make acceptable the presence of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be willing to invoke the Insurrection Act, which allows a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are defying national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has dispatched or mentioned sending military units to over ten cities, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses nationwide has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for example, murders were down 31% to 278 through August, per police data.

New survey data published on Wednesday revealed that most Americans oppose the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
